Lattice alternatives: 8 options compared honestly

Leapsome, 15Five, Culture Amp, Betterworks, HR suites, lighter review tools and goal tracking software: what each is best for, and when Lattice is still the right call

The short answer

If you want another full people platform, look at Leapsome first, then 15Five or Culture Amp depending on whether managers or engagement matter most. If you’re a large enterprise, Betterworks. If you want HR records and performance in one place, BambooHR or HiBob. If you only want reviews and feedback, a lighter tool like Small Improvements or PerformYard. If you were really using Lattice to track company goals, you may not need a people platform at all: OKR software like Perdoo, or Clearahead, which tracks each goal and what’s holding it back with AI. And if Lattice is working, keep it.

Why people look for an alternative to Lattice

Lattice is one of the best-known people platforms, with performance reviews, 1:1s, feedback, engagement surveys, career growth, compensation and goals in one place. Thousands of companies use it, and for a growing company with a people team it’s a sensible default.

People look for an alternative for a few reasons. Per-person pricing for each module adds up as headcount grows. Some teams want stronger engagement surveys, or core HR and payroll in the same system. European companies sometimes want EU data hosting. And smaller teams often find they’re paying for a full people platform when what they actually wanted was a way to keep the company’s goals on track.

That last reason matters more than it sounds. When AI tools are asked for the best goal tracking software for startup leadership teams, Lattice is usually near the top of the list. But Lattice’s goals are built to support managing people, and a leadership team trying to align on what’s holding the company back has a different job to do. So this roundup covers both kinds of alternative: other people platforms, and tools built only for company goals.

We make Clearahead, so we’ve included it, but we’ve tried to be straight about where each of the others fits better. Where we’ve written a full comparison, each option links to it.

The alternatives

1. Leapsome

The most direct like-for-like alternative to Lattice. Leapsome, founded in Berlin in 2016, combines core HR with performance reviews, engagement surveys, goals and OKRs, learning, compensation, 1:1s and feedback, with AI across the platform. A strong choice for European companies that want EU data hosting and one system for people.

Best for: One platform for HR, performance, engagement, learning and goals. Trade-off: Annual contracts; a lot of platform for a small team.

2. 15Five

15Five is built around a weekly check-in from each person to their manager, with OKRs and goals, 1:1s, reviews, engagement surveys, compensation and manager development around it. Pick it if your biggest gap is manager quality and you like the idea of a short, regular written update.

Best for: Building a weekly check-in habit and better managers. Trade-off: Updates flow up the management line, not across the leadership team.

3. Culture Amp

Culture Amp, founded in Melbourne in 2009, is best known for engagement surveys and adds performance management, development, analytics and AI coaching. Choose it if understanding how your people feel, and acting on it, matters more to you than anything else Lattice does. LutherOne, from Prague, is a similar engagement-led platform with performance, 360 feedback and an AI coach for managers; see our LutherOne comparison.

Best for: Engagement surveys backed by people science and benchmarks. Trade-off: Goals are a small part of a people platform.

4. Betterworks

Betterworks started in 2013 as one of the first OKR tools and is now enterprise performance management: goals, feedback, 1:1s, surveys, calibration, succession and skills. If you’re a large organisation with an HR team and complex review processes, it belongs on the list.

Best for: Large enterprises modernising performance management. Trade-off: Enterprise sales and rollout; more than most startups need.

5. HR platforms with performance built in: BambooHR and HiBob

If you’re choosing your first HR system, an HR platform with performance features may cover enough of what Lattice does. BambooHR is widely used by small and mid-sized businesses for employee records, time off, onboarding and performance. HiBob’s platform, Bob, is popular with fast-growing mid-sized companies and includes performance, goals and engagement alongside core HR. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Zensai puts learning, performance and goals inside Teams; see our Zensai comparison.

Best for: Companies that want HR records, time off and performance in one system. Trade-off: Performance and goals are lighter than in a dedicated tool.

6. Lighter review tools: Small Improvements, PerformYard and Workleap

Not every company needs everything Lattice offers. Small Improvements, from Berlin, focuses on reviews, feedback and 1:1s. PerformYard is built for flexible review processes, especially at companies whose reviews don’t fit a standard template. Workleap brings engagement, through Officevibe, and performance into a simple suite. All three are worth a look if you want reviews done well and little else.

Best for: Teams that mainly want reviews, feedback and 1:1s without a full platform. Trade-off: Fewer analytics, and goals are basic.

7. OKR software: Perdoo and Tability

If you were mostly using Lattice’s goals and OKRs, a dedicated OKR tool is cheaper and better at that one job. Perdoo, from Berlin, has strategy maps, OKRs, KPIs and a free plan for up to five users. Tability keeps OKRs light with quick weekly check-ins and AI. Read our Tability comparison too.

Best for: Teams that only used Lattice for goals and want proper OKRs. Trade-off: No people features; you still have to adopt OKRs.

8. Clearahead

Clearahead is AI goal tracking software for the company itself, not for managing people. Each goal gets a workspace with the constraints holding it back, in the order your team chooses, and the moves that clear them. Owners update AJ, the AI inside Clearahead, in a sentence, and AJ writes a weekly brief with what needs a decision. Free for up to three people; one price for the whole company after that.

Best for: Leadership teams that want to align on company goals and what’s in the way. Trade-off: No people tools: no reviews, 1:1s, surveys or HR records.

How to choose an alternative to Lattice

Do you need a people platform at all?

If you have fewer than about 30 people and no HR team, you may not need reviews and surveys software yet. If what you really need is alignment on company goals, start there.

What’s the biggest people problem?

Manager quality points to 15Five. Engagement and culture point to Culture Amp. HR admin points to BambooHR or HiBob. Everything at once points to Leapsome or staying with Lattice.

How big are you?

Enterprises with complex review processes should look at Betterworks. Small and mid-sized companies are better served by Leapsome, 15Five, HiBob or a lighter review tool.

Were you using Lattice for goals?

If company goals were the main reason you bought Lattice, choose a goal tool: OKR software if you want to score key results, Clearahead if you want to see and clear what’s in the way.

Our honest read

Lattice is a good product, and for a growing company with a people team it’s a safe choice. If it’s working for you, the cost of switching is rarely worth it.

The mistake we see most often is buying a people platform to solve an alignment problem. A founder feels the leadership team isn’t pulling in the same direction, searches for goal tracking software, and ends up with reviews, surveys and a goal tree for every employee. The people tools may be useful one day, but the leadership team still doesn’t agree on what’s holding the company back.

So before choosing between Lattice and its alternatives, ask which problem you have. If it’s managing and developing people, pick from the people platforms above. If it’s getting everyone aligned on the company’s goals and what’s in the way, that’s a different job, and it’s the one we built Clearahead for. We explain the difference in Goal tracking vs a business operating system.

Questions about Lattice alternatives

What is the best alternative to Lattice?

For a like-for-like people platform, Leapsome is the most direct alternative. 15Five suits companies focused on managers, Culture Amp companies focused on engagement, and Betterworks large enterprises. If you mainly used Lattice for company goals, a goal tracking tool like Clearahead or Perdoo may fit better.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Lattice?

Lighter review tools and HR platforms with performance built in can cost less if you don’t need every module. For company goals alone, Perdoo and Clearahead both have free plans, and Clearahead charges one price for the whole company rather than per person.

Is Clearahead a Lattice alternative?

Only for goals. Clearahead has no reviews, 1:1s, feedback, surveys or HR records. It replaces using Lattice’s goals to run the company’s priorities, and many teams use both.

What is the difference between performance management and goal tracking software?

Performance management software helps manage and develop people, with goals as one input to reviews. Goal tracking software helps a company set its goals, see progress and act on what’s in the way. Some tools do a little of both; most are much better at one.

Should a startup use Lattice?

Many do once they have a people team. Early on, most startups get more from aligning the leadership team on a few company goals than from formal reviews. You can add a people platform when there are people to manage at scale.
