Can ChatGPT or Claude run your company goals? Pros, cons and an alternative

Why not just ask an AI chatbot to help run your goals? A fair question, and an honest answer

The short answer

ChatGPT and Claude are brilliant general assistants: they’ll help you think through a goal, find what’s in the way and draft a plan in minutes. What they don’t give you is a shared, living model that the whole team works in, with owners, evidence and history, kept current week after week. Clearahead is built on the same kind of AI, but pointed at one job: running your company’s goal with everyone in it. Use a chatbot to think; use Clearahead to run it.

What are ChatGPT and Claude?

ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, and Claude, made by Anthropic, are general-purpose AI assistants. You talk to them in plain language and they write, analyse, summarise, plan and reason with you about almost anything. Both now offer team plans, projects that hold files and instructions, and memory that carries some context from one conversation to the next.

Founders and leaders already use them for exactly the kind of thinking Clearahead is about: "here's our goal, here's where we are, what's holding us back?" A good assistant will help you name the constraints, suggest moves and draft a plan in a few minutes. It's a genuinely useful way to think.

Where they came from

OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, and within months it was one of the fastest-adopted products ever. Anthropic released Claude in 2023. Since then, both have improved quickly and become part of how millions of people work, and they're a big reason we think companies now need an operating model for the AI era.

That shift is the one this whole site is about. Once information is cheap to gather and summarise, the rituals built to move it around, the status meeting, the monthly report, start to look like overhead. We've written about that in Information is cheap now. Decisions aren't.

ChatGPT and Claude pros and cons

What a general AI assistant does well, and where it struggles.

Where a general AI assistant shines

  • They’re superb thinking partners for working through a goal, a problem or a plan.
  • They’re fast, flexible and cheap, and most people already have one.
  • They can draft goals, constraints, plans and updates in seconds.
  • Projects and memory features keep some context between conversations.
  • They’re useful for almost everything else you do, too.

Where a general AI assistant struggles

  • The plan lives in one person’s chat, not in a place the whole team works.
  • There’s no shared structure: no owners, due dates, evidence or history that everyone can see.
  • Nothing keeps it current. The chatbot only knows what someone tells it, when they remember.
  • Each person’s chat holds a different version of the truth.
  • It won’t chase anyone, tell you what changed this week, or flag what needs a decision.

How a chatbot and Clearahead differ in practice

Clearahead is built on the same kind of AI. The difference isn't the intelligence; it's everything around it.

One person's chat, or the team's model

When you plan with a chatbot, the plan lives in your conversation. Your head of sales has a different conversation, and your COO another. In Clearahead, there's one model for the whole company: the goal, the constraints holding it back in the order your team chooses, and the moves under each, with one owner and a due date. Heads of department own constraints, their teams own moves, and advisers and the board follow as Viewers.

A thinking session, or a running system

A chatbot is at its best in the moment: you think something through and get an answer. Then the conversation ends. Clearahead is built to keep running. Owners tell AJ in a sentence when a move starts, gets stuck or finishes; AJ updates the model, logs the evidence and keeps the history. Every week AJ writes This week from AJ, with up to three things that need a decision, and on weekdays a short summary email tells each person what needs them.

Ask it anything, or a job to do

A general assistant does whatever you ask. AJ has one job, running the operating model, so it knows what to ask and when: why the goal matters, what's really in the way, whether a move is still the right one. That's the idea behind the machine asks, people decide.

What Clearahead doesn't do

AJ won't write your marketing copy, debug your code or help with your tax return. It's focused on the goal and what's in the way. For everything else, a general assistant is the right tool.

Should you choose a general AI assistant or Clearahead?

Choose a general AI assistant if

  • You want a thinking partner to work through a goal or a plan on your own.
  • You need help with a one-off: a strategy draft, a board update, a hard decision.
  • You’re a solo founder and there’s no team to align yet.
  • You want one AI tool for everything, not just goals.

Choose Clearahead if

  • You need the whole team, not just you, working from the same picture.
  • You want owners, due dates, evidence and history that everyone can see.
  • You want the model kept current without anyone pasting updates into a chat.
  • You want a weekly brief that tells you what changed and what needs a decision.

Our honest read

If you're a solo founder thinking through a goal, a general AI assistant may be all you need right now, and it's an excellent place to start.

The moment there's a team, the question changes. It's no longer "what should I do?" but "are we all working on the same thing, and is it moving?" A chat can't answer that, because the chat isn't where the team works. That's the gap Clearahead fills: one living model of the goal, kept current by AI, that everyone can see. Use a chatbot to think, and Clearahead to run it.

Questions about ChatGPT and Claude

Isn’t Clearahead just ChatGPT with a wrapper?

Clearahead uses large language models like the ones behind ChatGPT and Claude, but the value is in what’s around them: a shared model of the goal, constraints and moves, roles for the whole team, evidence and history, and AJ’s job of keeping it all current and telling you what needs a decision.

Can I use ChatGPT or Claude alongside Clearahead?

Of course. Many founders think out loud with a general assistant, then bring the result into Clearahead, where AJ turns it into the goal, constraints and moves the team works on.

Do I need a team to use Clearahead?

Clearahead is built for companies, not personal productivity. The free plan covers up to three people and one workspace, which suits a founding team.
