ClickUp and ClickUp Goals: pros, cons and an alternative

ClickUp wants to be the one app for all your work. Clearahead wants to be the one place your company sees its goal

The short answer

ClickUp is an all-in-one work platform: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, dashboards and Goals, which track targets linked to tasks. Clearahead isn’t a work platform. It holds one goal, the constraints holding it back and the moves that clear them, with AI keeping it current. If you want one app for all your team’s work, ClickUp is a strong choice. If you want the whole company aligned on what’s in the way of the goal, Clearahead does that job better.

What is ClickUp?

ClickUp is a work management platform that aims to bring a team's tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, dashboards and goals into one app. Work is organised into spaces, folders and lists, and each task can be viewed as a list, board, calendar, Gantt chart or table, with custom fields and automations on top.

Its Goals feature lets you set goals with targets that track progress automatically. A target can be a number, a true-or-false item or a set of linked tasks, such as everything in a sprint, and progress updates as those tasks close. Related goals can be grouped into folders, for example for a sprint cycle, a set of OKRs or a weekly scorecard, with owners, deadlines and permissions.

Where ClickUp came from

ClickUp was founded around 2017 by Zeb Evans and Alex Yurkowski. It began as an internal tool built to bring scattered work into one place, and grew quickly by promising teams they could replace many tools with one. Since 2023 it has added its own AI features across the platform.

The promise of consolidation is a real one: every extra tool is another place information can hide. We'd only add that one place for all the work isn't the same as one shared view of what matters.

ClickUp pros and cons

What ClickUp does well, and where it struggles.

Where ClickUp shines

  • It does a lot in one place: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, dashboards and goals.
  • It’s highly customisable, with many views, fields and automations.
  • Goals can track numeric, true-or-false and task-based targets that update as work completes.
  • It has its own AI features across the platform.
  • It’s good value for teams that want to consolidate several tools into one.

Where ClickUp struggles

  • The breadth comes with complexity. Many teams use a fraction of it and struggle with set-up.
  • Goals track whether targets and tasks are done, not what’s blocking the goal.
  • Someone has to design and maintain the structure of spaces, folders and lists.
  • Leadership views are dashboards you build, and they show activity more than progress.
  • Updates depend on people keeping tasks and targets current.

ClickUp vs Clearahead: side by side

ClickUp Clearahead
What it is An all-in-one work platform: tasks, docs, chat, dashboards and goals An operating model for one company goal: constraints, moves and evidence, run by an AI called AJ
Where it comes from Founded around 2017 by Zeb Evans and Alex Yurkowski The Theory of Constraints, rebuilt for teams that work with AI
How goals work Goals with targets (numbers, true/false or tasks), grouped in folders One goal per workspace, constraints in your order, moves with one owner and a due date
The question it answers Are we hitting the targets we set? What is holding the goal back, and who is clearing it?
Keeping it current Targets update as linked tasks close; people update the rest Owners tell AJ in a sentence; AJ updates the model and logs the evidence
Tasks and projects Yes: its core No. Moves have owners and dates, but there’s no task management
Cost Free plan; paid plans priced per user Free for up to 3 people and 1 workspace; £297/month or £2,997/year for the whole company

How ClickUp and Clearahead differ in practice

ClickUp is broad: it tries to hold every piece of work. Clearahead is narrow: it holds the goal, what's in the way, and the few moves that matter most.

Targets, or constraints

ClickUp Goals answers "are we hitting our targets?" That's useful when the path is clear. When it isn't, a target going red tells you there's a problem but not what it is. Clearahead is built on the Theory of Constraints, so the heart of it is the list of constraints really holding the goal back, in the order your team chooses, each with moves, owners and evidence.

Configure it, or use it

ClickUp's flexibility means someone has to configure it: which spaces, which folders, which fields, which dashboards. Clearahead has no configuration to speak of. AJ, the AI inside Clearahead, sets up your first goal with you in one conversation, and the structure is the same for every team.

Tasks closing, or AJ asking

In ClickUp, progress comes from tasks being closed and fields being updated. In Clearahead, owners tell AJ in a sentence when a move starts, gets stuck or finishes. AJ updates the model, logs the evidence and writes This week from AJ, with up to three things that need a decision.

What Clearahead doesn't do

Clearahead doesn't manage tasks, docs, whiteboards or chat, and it doesn't sync with ClickUp today. If you need an all-in-one work platform, ClickUp covers far more ground.

Should you choose ClickUp or Clearahead?

Choose ClickUp if

  • You want to replace several tools with one platform for all your team’s work.
  • You need detailed task and project management with lots of customisation.
  • Your goals are mainly numeric targets that tasks feed directly.
  • You have someone who enjoys configuring tools.

Choose Clearahead if

  • Your ClickUp is full of work but the company goal still isn’t moving.
  • You need to see what’s blocking the goal, in order, not a dashboard of targets.
  • You don’t want to design and maintain a goal system yourself.
  • You want everyone, including advisers, to see one simple picture.

Our honest read

If your team wants one app for its work and someone enjoys setting it up, ClickUp is a capable choice, and its Goals feature is fine for clear, measurable targets.

Clearahead is for a different moment: when there's plenty of work happening, the goal still isn't moving, and nobody can say what's really in the way. That's a focus problem, not a tooling problem, and it's the one we built Clearahead to solve, alongside whatever your team uses for the work itself. Questions about ClickUp

Is Clearahead a ClickUp alternative?

Only for running the company goal. Clearahead doesn’t manage tasks, docs or chat, so teams that use ClickUp for their work would usually keep it.

Can you use ClickUp and Clearahead together?

Yes. Keep tasks and projects in ClickUp. Use Clearahead for the goal, the constraints holding it back and the handful of moves that matter most.

Does Clearahead integrate with ClickUp?

Not today. Owners update their moves by telling AJ in a sentence, so the detailed work can stay in ClickUp without the two needing to sync.
